  • Q. What was the name of the Lucy Calkins book set that was shared? One of the books had rubrics for each genre (I think it was Writing Pathways but I can't find the book when I google it).
Also, one presenters shared a booklet she created for the Literary Essay unit. It was a collection of all the excerpts needed. There was a book for every student. Is it possible to share the pages of the booklet?
  • ...to weave my grammar standards into my mini-lessons using the chart given, to find a better way than last year to record my notes when conferring with students, to put my own style back into the mini-lessons...thank you for helping us grow as educators!
  • I plan to utilize the lift it off the page, the word sort activity, continue with DOL but incorporate the "opposite DOL" strategy, will use the two lines of students facing each other for the pro/con activity, and will use the student editing activity where the student places their piece of work on the doc cam and calls on other students to help them make their piece of writing even better!
There are many things I want to try as we'll- lots of good ideas presented!
  • This will be my first year, but I plan on using the units as much as the schedule allows.

My only worry, rather than question, is that I do not have an hour block for only writing. I have an E.L.A. block where I run a Daily 5. I spend majority of my conferencing time on reading.
  • I plan to implement these units in baby steps, learning through the successes as well as a few mishaps. I look forward to use the knowledge I've gained. It's been tremendous.
  • I plan to continue with the units with a better focus on organization, conferencing, & grammar.
  • My plans are to do a much more thorough job of teaching each unit!!! Thank you for the grammar info today, it is extremely helpful!
  • My task is to share what we learned here, with the rest of my colleagues.
Also, I'm thinking about applying to present new year. As a teacher who will be wrapping up her first year incorporating the units, I will have valuable insights to teachers who are in my position this summer. Also, I committed to culturally proficient pedagogy so I will also have added input on going through the motions.
    Q. Will the students have access to the scoring rubrics while performing pre/post tests?
    • Noncy, I don't give the rubrics at the pre/post assessment time. But never thought about it either. Thoughts, anyone?
