The strategy that l will most use next year is changing from reading book blurbs to students to placing bundles of books on student sections and letting them read through and select their top 3. We always encorporate the "why" piece. I still will coordinate book club groupings.
l can't think of a question, but am excited to get started.
One strategy I learned today was to let the students pick their top 3 choices and the have the teacher make the final decision for the book groups/clubs. I think I asked all my questions and they were sufficiently answered. Thanks! Ha Ha Cheryl, I did answer the exit ticket questions. I am still thinking about not doing the homework. ;)
One strategy I learned today is to place books available for students to use in book clubs at tables for students to look through instead of having myself go through each boom and explain them to the class as a whole. Another strategy I will use is to have students write down their top three boom choices so I can more easily place them in groups. I still would like to explore a little more about ideas for how to get boom supplies and materials available for my students.
I am looking forward to using some of the strategies for organizing all of the work involved in the workshop model. I love the information we got about more meaningful conferencing. I am still wondering about effective assessment.
I would like to use a more structured conferring strategy. I'm going to look into the app we discussed, because it sounds like I can tailor it to our report card standards pretty easily. I used Evernote last year, and I didn't find myself going back and using the information that I recorded. I need more of a purpose, I suppose.
I still wonder about ways I can get more of my books going home... (thinking Book Club unit especially) I teach two sessions of fourth grade and two of fifth grade, so the books for book clubs are shared through blocks. I also get nervous because I borrow so many book sets from our library and other teachers, so I'm scared they won't come back.
I am going to move from literature circles format into the book club format--question: Does Harvey Daniels still suggest role sheets, and I am I ready to give up those structures I worked so hard to implement and improve?
