10:07:18 From Suzanne Lossing to Everyone : We are switching to Schoology this next year - so, I’ve been wondering on what will be the most prevalent among our teachers.
10:07:52 From Theresa Miller to Everyone : I'm old school. Reading Response Journal. I model my thinking through a variety of entries. They choose what fits their thinking, or they can create their own response.
10:08:58 From Cynthia Bell to Everyone : I have used Padlet to create a classroom resource database for students. They are able to include comments with their thinking about the resources. So, I am thinking this could be adapted.

10:32:44 From LaTonya Torrence to Everyone : Can we have the title of the book placed in the chat please and thank you!
10:33:23 From Laura Gabrion to Everyone : 180 Days by Penny Kittle and Kelly Gallagher. I'll get the Amazon link, too.

10:34:44 From Suzanne Lossing to Everyone : I look at it as a finished piece. As an artist, art teacher, realizing “when is it done”, “when am I finished” becomes a focus. So when reading this, I felt it was finished — so, my reactions with students would to visually create a response - whether a feeling, or setting, or depicting what they look like, or the setting for a production, etc. What would help express the setting for the mood of the words written.
10:35:51 From Laura Gabrion to Everyone : I really like that, Sue--it capitalizes on the concepts of choice and voice.
10:36:49 From Suzanne Lossing to Everyone : Or drama - students acting out the this. ;-)
10:37:06 From Suzanne Lossing to Everyone : They can feel it, own it, relate to it.

10:51:03 From LaTonya Torrence to Everyone : That is an awesome idea!!
10:53:45 From Suzanne Lossing to Everyone : Like the writing idea. I have a table space in our Makerspace for student reflection - I will be adding writing prompts for them. If space permits - I’ll have a “writing wall” where I can segment a few days with a writing prompt for each day.

12:15:41 From Suzanne Lossing to Everyone : I like this slide -
12:16:27 From Julie Hartman to Everyone : I may use this format with teachers during PD as I introduce the DLEs.
12:17:14 From Laura Gabrion to Everyone : That is a great idea, Julie--it give them a framework for application.
12:17:40 From Theresa Miller to Everyone : I support these beliefs. The teacher needs to commit to developing the routine with students, and that takes time. From there, the sky is the limit!
12:21:57 From Laura Gabrion to Everyone : "Giving feedback during the process of the piece has been show as necessary to growth in writing."
12:22:14 From Jenny Sanford to Everyone : “...assessment alone will not improve achievement. Students also need targeted feedback to improve...give students useful feedback that will encourage them to dive back into the work”
12:22:33 From Theresa Miller to Everyone : THe 5th bullet... feedback is NECESSARY DURING the process.
12:22:40 From Kelly Watson to Everyone : "assessment alone will not improve achievement. Students also need targeted feedback to improve... give students useful feedback that will encourage them to die back into the work"
12:25:53 From Jenny Sanford to Everyone : I have three classes of 7th grade so I put their responses on the board, take a picture, and then erase it. I create the anchor chart at the end of the day with all their ideas.
12:26:49 From Laura Gabrion to Everyone : That's a great idea, Jenny!
12:28:17 From Theresa Miller to Everyone : Our district subscribes to Pensieve. Can use different tabs for different subjects.
12:28:39 From Jenny Sanford to Everyone : I use sticky notes to take notes when I confer and then transfer it to a Google Sheet with tabs for each class at the end of the day.

12:32:31 From Michelle Renna to Everyone : Moving from teacher of literature to literacy mentor
12:35:16 From Theresa Miller to Everyone : Once you determine levels and needs for each student, meet with some more often. Make appointments.
12:36:27 From Theresa Miller to Everyone : I like the Literacy Mentor concept!
12:37:51 From Theresa Miller to Everyone : Having kids be prepared with specific writing process questions... Not "is this good?"
12:43:16 From Laura Gabrion to Everyone : It's such a great way to build their self-efficacy and their literate identity.
12:46:21 From LaTonya Torrence to Everyone : Malcolm Gladwell is great!
12:47:43 From Theresa Miller to Everyone : I highly recommend The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller. Great for personal and instructional reasons!
12:48:02 From Michelle Renna to Everyone : @ Theresa, I second that recommendation!!!
12:48:30 From Michelle Renna to Everyone : Comes back to that question: Is it worth the time?
12:59:15 From Theresa Miller to Everyone : Could you put a link to that book in the chat, please?

13:07:38 From Michelle Renna to Everyone : @Julie - Thanks you!! Love this to find tier 2 words to teach
13:08:34 From Suzanne Lossing to Everyone : You could also use Kahoot to see where student knowledge is on the words. (Our kids love doing the Kahoot games - helps them see if they are/are not the only ones who got it wrong/right.
13:11:03 From Laura Gabrion to Michelle Renna(Direct Message) : I think we can give them 10 minutes.

13:22:20 From Theresa Miller to Everyone : Do you have a recommendation for how to "sell" this to my staff? Many will think it's "one more thing" and not worth their time - unless I can convince them otherwise! I already touched base with out Curriculum Director to share many of the resources you have presented over the two days.
13:23:13 From Michelle Renna to Everyone : Here's the website for the ELA Curriculum for St. Vrain Valley Schools: https://sites.google.com/svvsd.org/ela-curriculum/home?authuser=0 They spent the last year developing essential questions & summtive assessments as well as texts and task lists for each grade level.
13:26:41 From Michelle Renna to Everyone : @Theresa -Option 1: start small with something that doesn't feel like too much of a stretch but could have big impact: Essential #5 (higher order discussion ) is one that I started with in one of my districts. It helped that 5D was their evaluation tool and they were looking for ways to incorporate more talk.
13:27:50 From Michelle Renna to Everyone : @Theresa - ANother possibility: another district I work with started with writing and focused on claim, evidence, and reasoning. The department chairs and I met first to talk through what that looks like in each of the disciplines.
13:29:19 From Michelle Renna to Everyone : @Theresa - article "How to Build a Schoolwide Culture of Disciplinary Literacy" https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ulEwnQqhX1soYKA_50e0x-rqdLgzXRDv/view - This article, written by disciplinary experts Releah Lent and Marsha Voigt, describe six questions building leaders can ask themselves in order to determine whether there is currently a schoolwide culture of literacy across their building. By exploring these six questions, leaders can consider areas to celebrate, as well as opportunities for future growth.
13:34:43 From Laura Gabrion to Everyone : Hi, Erica--we are exploring the ELA Resource Hub: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_XqBxpqhtEHvi7YaequqQ30ZnPB...
13:36:27 From Theresa Miller to Michelle Renna(Direct Message) : Thank you for the resources!
13:36:42 From Michelle Renna to Theresa Miller(Direct Message) : Absolutely!!!
13:37:31 From Laura Gabrion to Everyone : @Theresa, another thing that you could do is to get start with an interested group of teachers and engage them in a book study. I recommend any of these three: This Is Disciplinary Literacy, Disciplinary Literacy in Action, and Investigating Disciplinary Literacy. You could pilot the implementation of one or two of the practices, and then, roll it out to the other teachers.
13:39:18 From Michelle Renna to Everyone : In case you all need ANOTHER link to explore: https://padlet.com/pennykittle/conversationsWkellygallagher?utm_cam... This is the 30 days of conversations that Penny and Kelly did this year and last year. SO many cool ideas for teaching...
